  • L-artist żagħżugħ Gabriel Buttigieg ħa l-ispirazzjoni mill-ktieb ta’ missieru 'Dik il-Qtajra' għall-aħħar xogħol viżiv tiegħu, xogħol li ttella’ f’wirja f’Diċembru li għadda, fil-Mosta. F’dan l-avveniment li ġej, il-missier u l-iben se jiddiskutu kemm it-test kif ukoll l-arti, bħala parti mill-Festival tal-Ktieb fuq il-Kampus, il-Ġimgħa 23 ta’ Marzu fl-4.30pm fil-Kwadranglu tal-Università. L-avveniment se jieħu l-forma ta’ intervista u se jinkludi qari mit-test, akkumpanjat minn stampi tal-arti ta’ Gabriel.

'Dik il-Qtajra' kien ippubblikat għall-ewwel darba fl-1983 u dak iż-żmien kien iċċensurat, meqjus bħala sovversiv, irreverenti u sesswalment espliċitu. Il-ktejjeb ta’ 24 paġna miktub bl-idejn u illustrat b’tip ta’ doodles kien ippubblikat minn Alfred Buttigieg innifsu u qatt ma wasal fuq l-ixkafef pubbliċi peress li kemm il-ħwienet kif ukoll il-libreriji rrifjutaw li juru l-ktieb fuq l-ixkafef tagħhom.

Issa l-ktejjeb reġa’ ngħata l-ħajja permezz ta’ Gabriel, li ħoloq serje ta’ tpinġijiet u pitturi li jieħdu ispirazzjoni mill-ktieb u t-temi tiegħu – ir-rabja, il-vjolenza, is-sarkażmu u l-egoċentriċità, fost oħrajn. Hu jaqbad l-ispirtu tiegħu u jagħti espressjoni lill-viżjoni pessimista tiegħu u ta’ missieru tan-natura umana, f’xogħlijiet ta’ arti monokromi u bil-kulur.

Gabriel Buttigieg, li għandu 24 sena, dan l-aħħar ipproduċa serje ta’ xogħlijiet bl-isem 'Babies'. Fl-2016 hu tella’ wirjiet individwali: Paintings u Nudes, u ħa sehem ukoll f’numru ta’ wirjiet kollettivi.

Fl-1981 Alfred Buttigieg ħoloq il-grupp teatrali Ateatru. Bejn l-2003 u l-2008 kien parti mill-kumitat li mexxa t-Teatru Manoel imma hu magħruf l-aktar bħala drammaturgu. Id-drammi l-aktar popolari tiegħu jinkludu 'Ir-Rewwixta tal-Qassisin', 'Ippermettili Nitlaq' u 'Mela Hawn xi Manikomju?'

    Il-Festival tal-Ktieb fuq il-Kampus huwa organizzat mill-Kunsill Nazzjonali tal-Ktieb u l-Għaqda tal-Malti, b’attivitajiet bejn id-9.00am sal-4.00 pm. Il-Ġimgħa l-attivtajiet jibqgħu sejrin sat-tard. Il-Festival għandu l-għan li jippromwovi l-letteratura waqt li jagħti spazju lill-pubblikaturi u lid-distributuri tal-kotba biex jippromwovu u jbigħu l-pubblikazzjonijiet tagħhom. Il-programm tal-Festival huwa varjat u joffri firxa wiesgħa ta’ avvenimenti li jolqtu l-interessi ta’ ħafna, u jinkludi tnedijiet ta’ kotba, taħditiet u films, workshops u mużika lajv.

Young artist Gabriel Buttigieg takes cue from his father Alfred’s controversial book Dik il-Qtajra (The Droplet) and uses it as inspiration for his latest series of works on paper, displayed to the public in an exhibition in Valletta last December. In this event, father and son discuss both the book and its visual representation, as part of the Campus Book Festival, on Friday 23rd March at 4.30 pm at the University quadrangle. The event will take the form of an interview and will include readings accompanied by Gabriel’s art on screen.

'Dik il-Qtajra' was first published in 1983 and was back then censored for its language, and for being sexually explicit, subversive and irreverent. The 24-page book, handwritten, and illustrated with doodle-type drawings, was self-published, but never made it to public bookshelves, mainly because both bookshops and local libraries refused to stock the book.

The booklet has been resurrected by the son who has produced a series of drawings and paintings based on the book’s themes – anger, violence, sarcasm and egocentricity. He captures its spirit and expresses his own and his father’s pessimistic take on human nature via colour and monochrome pieces.

24-year old Gabriel Buttigieg’s recent art is a series of works called Babies. He has also created the artwork for Brikkuni’s album Rub Al Khali. 2016 saw two of his solo exhibitions Paintings and Nudes and he has also taken part in a number of collective exhibitions prior to this.

In 1981 Alfred set up the theatre group Ateatru. Between 2003 and 2008 he was part of the Manoel Theatre management committee but he better known as a playwright. His most popular plays include 'Ir-Rewwixta tal-Qassisin', 'Ippermettili Nitlaq' and 'Mela Hawn xi Manikomju?'

The Campus Book Festival is organised by the National Book Council and the Għaqda tal-Malti, kicking off daily at 9 am with back-to-back activities planned until 4 pm. On Friday the activities will continue until late. The Festival aims to promote literature while giving publishers and book distributors a platform to sell and promote their publications. The Festival’s programme is vast and offers a wide range of events to suit many interests, from book launches and talks to film screenings, workshops and live music.
